Monumental Image!

OK, that was a slightly misleading title. It's an image of a monument. But what a monument! The monument honors the Girondins, part of the French Revolution, but not nearly as radical as the Jacobins. Their mass execution marked the beginning of the Reign of Terror and a sobering reminder of how mass movements can take on a momentum and life, (more to the point - death), of its own.

There is a contrast in this image from the sad and violent period marked by the monument and the circus tent in the background. Draw from that whatever lessons or parallels that you like.
